Ice cream innovation – April/​May 2009

Nestlé’s Skinny Cow is the first portion-​controlled ice cream in Australia to be 97% fat-​free and have no added sugar. Four flavours are: English toffee, chocolate chip, vanilla chocolate and chocolate berry.

Skinny Cow’s Truffle Bars are low-​fat ice cream bars available in chocolate or French vanilla flavours.

In the US, Häagen-​Dazs has launched Five – a range of super-​premium ice cream containing five all-​natural ingredients. The flavours are brown sugar …

… coffee

… ginger

… milk chocolate

… mint

… passion fruit

… and vanilla bean.

Häagen-​Dazs has also launched Ice Cream Smoothies, a blend of creamy fruit ice cream and fruity sorbet. The two UK flavours are raspberry summer berries and mango apricot.

Ben & Jerry’s has unveiled its 4^th Fairtrade flavour in the UK: Fairtrade Chocolate Macadamia, available in a 500ml tub.

Unilever UK has announced the ‘New Flavour of the Year’ for its Carte D’Or brand: Caramel Cinnamon Waffle. The new ice cream is available in a 900ml container.

Wall’s has added a premium product to its Cornetto range. Cornetto Love Chocolate is claimed to be the first chocolate wafer cone on the market.

Wall’s has also launched Solero Berry Berry, which boasts a 50% total fruit content of real fruit pieces and fruit juice.

Magnum Temptation is made using new ‘cold shaping’ technology, and is packaged in a stylish, individual box.

Graham’s The Family Dairy’s first venture into the frozen dairy market is a range of luxury ice cream.

Wells Dairy says its US Blue Bunny brand is the first to offer frozen novelties that combine frozen yogurt and honey oat granola: Aspen Frozen Yogurt Granola Bar …

… and Sedona Frozen Yogurt Granola Sandwich.

Perry’s Ice Cream in the US has introduced Rock Pile to the Ralph – a limited edition flavour to mark the Buffalo Bills’ 50^th football season.

UK-​based Purbeck Ice Cream introduces the unique British damson ice cream, a liquorice ice cream, and a ‘Serious White Chocolate’ made with extra-​substantial chunks.
