The Impulse Ice Cream category took the majority share of the sector last year, with a 45.4% value share and a 39.3% volume share for 2012. Take Home Ice Cream wasn’t far behind, with 38.3% and 37.3% value and volume shares respectively. Artisanal Ice Cream held a value share of 16.2% and a volume share of 23.4% for the same year.
Artisanal Ice Cream will display the most value growth over the next five years, at a CAGR of 1.6% to 2017. Impulse Ice Cream follows closely with a CAGR of 1.5%, and Take Home Ice Cream falls just behind with a CAGR of 1.3% for 2012 to 2017.
In terms of volume, both Artisanal and Impulse Ice Cream will grow at a CAGR of 1.1% respectively to 2017, as Take Home Ice Cream will grow at a CAGR of just 0.9% for the same period.
The Hypermarkets & Supermarkets channel has managed to retain its majority share of the Japanese Ice Cream sector over the past few years, and this share has grown considerably in that time. This gain in share has come at the cost of Food & Drinks Specialists, who have seen their share deplete in the same period.
