Discounter Aldi has introduced a ‘rare’ collection of wines from top winemakers, available in its UK stores from this week.
The collection of 12 wines, which all cost under £8 each, have been carefully curated by Aldi’s wine buying team and sourced from within the retailer’s current supply network. They are designed to offer consumers a wine that they can trust without the price tag to match.
Each wine comes with its own story relating to its makers and the journey from grape to glass. They include Mo Sisters Coonawarra cabernet sauvignon from Australia; made by renowned winemaker Bill Moularadellis, it is made using grapes from a boutique vineyard that his daughters bought with their savings.
The cheapest – at £4.99 a bottle – is a crisp, off-dry Hungarian white wine called Little Princess, named after the grape varietal used to make it. The most expensive, at a mere £7.99, is the ‘fresh, floral’ BX Crémant De Bordeaux Rosé from the Calvet family.
Aldi joint managing director for corporate buying Tony Baines said: “There is a real appetite from our ever-growing customer base to try wines with a great story and provenance, providing the perfect excuse to introduce this exciting range.
“We pride ourselves on our close relationships with some of the world’s best suppliers and vineyards who have also helped us formulate our famous core collection. We want to ensure that we are bringing quality wines with great stories behind them – but without the hefty price tags.”
