American confectionery brands outsell British brand in Asda

American confectionery brands Hershey’s and Reese’s have outsold established British brands in their first week on sale at ASDA in the UK.

When Asda announced it was to bring two American confectionery brands to the UK, it could hardly have imagined that sales in the first week would outstrip some British favourites.

Hershey’s and Reece’s chocolates have been favourites in the US for more than 100 years but have only just started to make an impression on UK consumers. Some buyers have said that they’ll go to incredible lengths to keep the chocolate to themselves, with one visitor to Asda’s Facebook page saying that she’ll hide them in the vegetable drawer of the fridge.

The new arrivals are Hershey’s Cookies ‘n’ Crème Bar, Hershey’s Kisses Cookies ‘n’ Crème, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups Bars and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Miniatures.   “We have been gobsmacked by the reaction to the launch of the new Hershey’s range in-store and online”, said Asda’s head of chocolate, Rob Benyon. “The stock is flying off the shelves, pausing at the checkout and making its way into shoppers’ mouths in record time. We’ve doubled the number of Asda Facebook fans in a week on the back of this launch, which is unprecedented.”
