The British Cheese Board has presented Christine (Chris) Ashby with its prestigious Bath & West Cheese Industry Award at this year’s show.

The annual award, which recognises outstanding contributions to the UK cheese industry in the areas of production, marketing, research or training, was presented to Chris of AB Cheesemaking. The award recognises her long career and particularly her involvement in the development and delivery of cheesemaking courses to the next generation of British cheesemakers.

Nigel White, secretary of the British Cheese Board, said: “Chris’s contribution to the cheese industry has been considerable and recognises a long career in different roles in the UK and internationally. She and colleagues spotted an opening in the market for the delivery of basic cheese training courses that have been hugely successful in bringing new cheesemakers into the industry.

“Her unique understanding of how science and art come together to create the best cheeses, and her wonderful training style, make her a superb teacher. Many a cheesemaker who has attended one of her courses has gone on to make award-winning cheese.”

Chris said: “I’m delighted to have won the Bath & West Cheese Industry Award. It’s a great accolade and something I’m very proud of. In cheesemaking, you never stop learning and I’m excited by what else there is to discover. I’m lucky to have a job I feel so passionate about and to be able to pass on my knowledge and experience to so many through AB Cheesemaking.”
