Disease has wiped out about two-thirds of Zespri’s kiwifruit supplies from Chile and almost a third of production from Italy, encouraging others to look at supply from Greece, which is unaffected.

Despite the drop in production, prices were expected to remain ‘steady’.

The 30% reduction in supply from Italy, because of ‘bacterial canker’ or batteriosi, was equal to about a million trays, which was less than 1% of Zespri’s total global supply.

There’s no cure for the disease, which isn’t in New Zealand. The fungus is found around the world but had not affected kiwifruit outside of Chile, Zespri said. Existing treatments hadn’t worked in Chile.
