The new systems include AccuCheck from Bobst, which will help to detect carton defects.
Colbert Packaging – a US manufacturer of folding cartons, rigid setup boxes and speciality paperboard packaging – has announced a “significant investment” in a new printing press, die cutter and inline inspection system.
All three new machines have been installed and are now fully operational in Colbert’s offset manufacturing facility in Lake Forest, Illinois.
They include an RMGT 1050 LX printing press from Ryobi MHI Graphic Technology, a 41-inch offset press that can print six-colour processes and coat paperboard in a single pass using both aqueous and UV inks and coatings. It handles a wide range of paper stocks at speeds of up to 16,200 sheets per hour, and utilises air management technology for smooth sheet transport and skeleton cylinders to prevent scratching and smearing.
Colbert Packaging has also installed a Bobst Expertcut 106 PER die cutter – with innovative features and intelligent systems aimed at maximising uptime, accelerating processes, reducing waste and simplifying maintenance – plus a Bobst Accucheck inline inspection system, which will allow the company to check every single carton on its production line during the gluing process.
Accucheck is able to identify a variety of physical defects on printed cartons, Colbert Packaging said, including colour variation, missing or incorrect text, inaccurate die cuts, surface scratches and marks, and other non-conformities.
“This investment, which augments rather than replaces our lineup of presses and die cutters, has greatly improved our production capacity and efficiency,” said Jim Hamilton, president of Colbert Packaging. “At the same time, the addition of a unit that ensures 100% quality controlled production is a natural extension of our long-standing commitment to consistent high quality.”
