“combiSwift is one of our most modern screw caps,” said Hanno Bertling, global product manager for opening solutions at SIG Combibloc. “It’s designed specifically to suit consumers’ need for convenience. The closure, made from high-quality, recyclable plastic, can be opened effortlessly with a single twist. The convenient opening behaviour is due to the fact that the closure is applied over a laminated hole, and on first opening the consumer only has to pierce razor-thin aluminium and polymer layers.
“To make this technique work, holes of the correct size are first punched into the carton and these holes are then coated with aluminium and polymers.”
At the premises of SIG Combibloc’s customers, the three-part closure is applied to the outside of the carton pack after the aseptic filling of the product and subsequent sealing of the carton pack inside the filling machine.
It consists of a flange with an integrated cutting ring and a cap. The ring integrated into the flange opens the thin layers with a twisting motion. The closure has an overall height of 12.6mm and weighs 2.7g.
“When handling products such as sauces and soups containing chunks of meat or vegetables, stocks with a higher free-fat content, chunky tomatoes or thicker desserts, an easy-to-use and recloseable screw cap is hugely practical,” said Bertling. “It gives an added benefit for food manufacturers. With this extra feature, the products are clearly differentiated from competing packaging on the sales shelf, and grab the interest of consumers to whom our combiSwift offers a high degree of additional convenience.”
