FROM VITAFOODS GENEVA, SWITZERLAND
Vitafoods is always exciting in that it offers revelation in terms of ingredients. I have just been on the Frutarom stand, where Dr Matthias Kreuter was talking about how he barely understands 10% of what is happening with in plants and yet they are so beneficial to us. Holger Riemensperger commented that, in general, we know how but not why certain reactions within the plant occur. The range of RosT (rosmarinic acid) from rosemary and CynaxT from artichoke for instance is very much in its original state but sweetened with sucralose to make it palatable.
At the Bayer conference the talk was of recent studies showing how a simple multivitamin – such as Berocca, for instance – can have a significant effect on mental health and cognition. In combination with guarana this is apparently even more enhanced.
Lunchtime gave me the chance to sit with Emma Wightman, a lecturer from Northumbria University, who is going to write for Beverage Innovation magazine and debunk a few myths on superhealth drinks – clarity is everything!
The Tasting Bar is always fascinating – stay tuned for a gallery on FoodBev.com on that. But right now I have another few stands to visit – not quite sure what I will find but I will certainly be reporting back soon!
