Famous Brands plans to extend the brand to the rest of the African region in the long term because the company has operations in the continent including Nigeria, Africa’s second biggest economy.
Famous Brands CEO Kevin Hedderwick said: “This acquisition has been prompted by the strong demand of frozen yogurt as a popular sector in South Africa in the past 24 months.”
Wakaberry was started a little over three years ago in the port city of Durban on the eastern seaboard of South Africa. It was started as a ‘first-to-market self-serve frozen yogurt brand’ by the husband and wife combination of Ken and Michele Fourie. They were also assisted by business partner David Clark. Wakaberry now has 33 outlets straddling eight South African provinces.
It is expected that by June this year, Wakaberry will have more than 40 outlets in South Africa with more stores set to open in the second half of the year.
