Steve McCutcheon, FSANZ CEO, said the application, from Dow AgroSciences Australia, sought approval for food derived from a herbicide-tolerant cotton line.
“The cotton has been genetically modified to tolerate the herbicides 2, 4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and glufosinate ammonium,” said McCutcheon. “Our safety assessment found no public health or safety concerns, and concluded that food derived from this cotton line is as safe for human consumption as food derived from conventional cotton cultivars.
“FSANZ welcomes comments from government agencies, public health professionals, industry and the community.”
The closing date for submissions is 29 April 2014.
