Jones Soda will celebrate its coming-of-age with the release of an alcoholic beverage that combines cider with green apple soda.
The company, which turns 21 this year, developed the drink in partnership with Jeff Bland, the cider maker for Spire Mountain Ciders at Fish Brewing in Olympia, Washington.
The hybrid drink is described as being a combination of hard cider, Washington apples and the same natural flavours used in Jones’ green apple soda. It is made in the northwest of the US and contains 6% ABV.
Packaged in a green glass bottle with a traditional crown cap, Spiked Jones shares a visual similarity with the company’s other products but is differentiated from the rest of Jones Soda’s portfolio through the ‘spiked’ reference; it’s the first ‘hard’ drink to be launched by the brand, and, Jones Soda claimed, the first alcoholic cider-soda beverage in the US.
‘In development since 1997’
Jones Soda CEO Jennifer Cue said: “As Jones Soda Co turns 21, we couldn’t think of a more fitting way to celebrate than to launch an alcohol-based extension, Spiked Jones. This is a product we have actually been contemplating for years, having filed the ‘Spiked Jones’ name in 1997. Innovating and launching the first hard cider-soda beverage is a natural transition and it allows us to enter an entirely new category with our brand, reaching a demographic that grew up loving our soda.”
The brand is no stranger to releasing celebratory editions: last year, it kicked off its 20th year by releasing a birthday cake-flavoured soda.
Spiked Jones will be available this summer in Jones Soda’s home market of the US Pacific Northwest, and will be distributed by longtime Jones Soda partner Columbia Distributing.
