Lactalis acquires Forlasa to become Spain’s big cheese

French dairy firm Lactalis has acquired the cheese business of Spanish company Forlasa Alimentación, making it the leading cheese manufacturer in Spain.

Subject to the approval of the Spanish competition authorities, Lactalis will incorporate all Forlasa cheese brands, which include El Ventero, Gran Capitán and Don Bernardo.

Forlasa Alimentación, founded in 1970 by Bernardo Ortega, father of current owner, has over 320 employees and is present in over 20 countries. The company’s gross sales exceeded 150 million euros in 2009 and it currently ranks as the world leader in the manufacture of Manchego cheese.
