Molson Coors gives £175m boost to British beer industry
Molson Coors will invest £175m in its breweries across the UK to boost the struggling British beer industry.
The North American brewing giant, which has four plants in the country, has also vowed to invest an additional £15m a year over the next five years developing its site in Burton-on-Trent.
Molson Coors also revealed that it would invest £5m in the Sharp’s brewery in Cornwall and in its two other brewing plants in the country.
The group said the Burton investment will result in modernisation of the site, and achievement of the targeted savings of a billion litres of water by 2012 and energy reduction of 20% by 2020. Investment will also be made in the group’s packaging operation.
Molson Coors UK and Ireland chief executive, Mark Hunter, said the company has to ensure that it has the flexibility on brewing and packaging to reflect the fact that the on-premise is getting smaller and the off-premise is growing.
According to the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA), beer sales in Britain slumped 9.8% in the three months to the end of June, and are 7% lower so far in 2011.
