As the main man behind the event Jamie Oliver said – it’s small steps that make a difference and every stand donates to the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation.
One stand that is also supporting Student Social Enterprise is ‘Muddy Wellies’ linked to the UK’s Royal Agricultural University. Director of Business Development there, Simon King came up with the popular idea of brewing a beer.
“No, not home brew, that would have been drunk by our students faster than it was made, but through working with an actual brewer. We chose to brew our beer with Bath Ales, best known for their Gem and Festival beers”.
The Original Ale (4.8%) was carefully crafted using Maris Otter barley and Goldings hops to create a malty ruby coloured ale. Golden Ale (4.4%) is the second variety made using the same hops but this time it s a smooth golden ale, then there is Premium carbonated cider (4.5%) matured in old oak vats and the newest addition to the Muddy Wellies range is Hedgehog Ale (4.4%) using Bramling Cross, Cascade and Nugget hops with a hint of citrus that is especially good with spicy foods.
Profits from sales are ploughed back in (sorry) to the First Steps Fund as the basis for other exciting business ideas. BIZ the small business network in London has already shown an interest in their work and by touring the festivals and Christmas markets the beer is becoming better known. It’s a tough time though – the bars are groaning with the weight of new Craft beers and you have to big and bright to be noticed. That said, students have always been stalwart supporters of this product and of course the price is good – they call it ‘ Drinks with Sole’.
