Nestlé will invest €80 million in an infant formula production plant in the Netherlands to cater for growing demand for dairy-free infant nutrition.
Nestlé Netherlands CEO Marc-Aurel Boersch told The Financieele Dagblad that the factory, expected to come into operation next year, will cater to the increasing number of infants that are unable to drink cow’s milk.
“This requires extremely specialist knowledge, which is why we have opted for the Netherlands,” he told the newspaper.
The company’s existing site in Nunspeet, in the centre of the country, will be expanded with the addition of further technical installations to facilitate the production of dairy-free infant formula milk.
Boersch continued: “The Netherlands and Nestlé are linked together since 1869 when our first product was sold here. Our infant nutrition factory has its roots in Nunspeet since 1895. Our presence for a long period of time has made us feel part of the Dutch society. In addition, we consider that Nestlé and the Netherlands has established a successful collaboration built upon the large amount of valuable expertise that is present here in the field of food technology and the inspiring Dutch innovation infrastructure. We consider our investment in the factory as an investment for a continuous fruitful connection in the future with The Netherlands.”
In December, FoodBev reported that Danone had invested €240 million in the construction of a new plant in the Netherlands for its early life nutrition business.
The investment would allow Danone to capitalise on growing demand for its international early life nutrition brands, including Aptamil and Nutrilon, for both standard and specialised products. The facility, set to begin production in late 2017, is being built in Cuijk, near Nijmegen – 45 miles south of Nunspeet.
Dutch dairy company FrieslandCampina has also announced investment in infant formula milk, partnering with Glycosyn earlier this year to develop a method for incorporating human milk oligosaccharides into lactose milk.
