Rebecca Prescott14 Sep 2011

The PepsiCo Foundation has committed a $1m grant to support LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes in Los Angeles, US, a centre of Mexican-American culture.

The three-year grant will contribute to the establishment of an Edible Teaching Garden and Culinary Arts Programme for Hispanic youth in the local community.

LA Plaza’s efforts in Southern California focus on improving children’s awareness of nutrition, increasing physical activity and strengthening knowledge of Mexican and Mexican-American cuisine.

Jacqueline Millan, senior director of corporate contributions at PepsiCo, said: “LA Plaza’s approach to child education is unique, in that it aims to empower youth while raising awareness of nutrition, exercise, agriculture and cultural heritage all of which are important to PepsiCo.

“This programme will benefit children by sharing the rich cultural history and significance of Mexican and Mexican-American cuisine, while at the same time encouraging them to lead healthier lifestyles.”

Through the PepsiCo Foundation’s commitment to an Edible Teaching Garden and Culinary Arts programme, LA Plaza will ultimately support thousands of children ages 520, including hundreds of regional teachers through curriculum-based workshops, group tours and online resources.
