Pizza Hut has developed a pizza box that can be transformed into a makeshift movie projector, screening films directly from the consumers’ smartphone.
The Blockbuster Box revolves around the pizza saver – a tripod-like structure that is inserted into Pizza Hut boxes to prevent the cardboard lid from caving in on the pizza. The new pizza saver detaches into two parts – a lens, and a stand to hold a smartphone in place inside the box. A cut-out hole can be popped out of the front of the box, the magnifying lens inserted, and the film screened straight from the consumers’ smartphone by scanning a QR code printed on the side of the box.
There are four different limited-time variants, offering consumers the chance to download a different pizza-related movie every time. The movies consist of titles called Slice Night, Anchovy Armageddon, Hot & Ready, and Fully Loaded – representing individual movie offerings for fans of the horror, science fiction, romance and action genres alike.
Diners will still need their own speakers to project sound from their smartphone while it’s inside the pizza box, and the quality of the image magnified onto a blank wall or screen is limited, according to various media outlets. But Pizza Hut will be hoping that the unique concept helps it to further establish itself as a part of movie nights in, and promote the existing relationship between pizza and home entertainment.
The Blockbuster Box has been introduced for a limited time in Hong Kong, and was designed by advertising agency Ogilvy Hong Kong.
