Robert Wiseman Dairies confirms milk price from 1 May 2009

Robert Wiseman Dairies has confirmed a standard litre price from 1 May 2009 until further notice of 24.02 pence per litre, a reduction of 1p a litre.
Pete Nicholson, Wiseman’s milk procurement director, said: “Despite the market for bulk cream remaining weak and out of line with the milk price we offer, we had hoped to avoid a milk price adjustment from May. But our competitive position has been compromised by other moves in the market place.
“Regrettably, we cannot maintain a milk price which doesn’t reflect the returns we’re getting from bulk cream and is significantly out of step with the rest of the market. However, in order to provide an element of stability going forward, we’ve agreed to maintain the new price as a minimum until 31 July 2009.
“With continuing economic uncertainty, world markets for dairy products remain in the doldrums. There’s no doubt, however, that a healthier relationship between global supply and demand for dairy products will in time lead to higher levels of stability and confidence through the whole dairy supply chain, which we would welcome.”
Wiseman Milk Partnership chairman, Colin Telfer, said: “While we appreciate that Wiseman has done its best to absorb poor returns from the bulk cream market, and has to be competitive, this is a blow for Wiseman Milk Partnership farmers. However, I welcome the price guarantee for the next three months from Wiseman, and I look forward to signs of the market strengthening with the prospect of a return to rising milk prices once again.”
