British soup maker Rod & Ben’s has announced a surprise side-step into ready-prepared desserts.
The company will make three organic pudding pots, including a tangy lemon posset, a lemon posset with berry topping, and a chocolate pudding.
The new products blend West Country double cream with fine ingredients such as Sicilian lemon oil, and will retail with a suggested price of between £3.49 and £3.99 for each twin pack.
It marks a noted departure from Rod & Ben’s previous range expansion, which has focused on vegetable bouillon, stew pots and recently dips, sauces and spreads.
But it’s more famous for its line-up of soups – including the organic summer varieties it launched last June, and the winter warmer soups released in October.
Explaining the move, Rod & Ben’s managing director Tim Wigram said: “A key strand of our longer-term thinking is to broaden our appetite appeal whilst building upon our ‘one pot’ prowess.
“Whilst the winter months are very much a matter of all hands to the ladle (keeping up with our organic soup orders), there’s still a little scope to expand our appeal during the spring and summer seasons. Besides that is the simple, unavoidable truth that Roddy & I both adore a proper pud!”
The new puddings have launched this week through organic food retailer Abel & Cole, with additional listing in Ocado and Planet Organic to follow.
They will then be made available through independents and organic retailers by mid-February, the brand said.
