The Ethical Tea Partnership links with Fairtrade

The Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO) and the Ethical Tea Partnership (ETP) are announcing a joint commitment to work together to improve the lives of tea workers and promote sustainability in the tea industry.
The Ethical Tea Partnership works to monitor and improve the social and environmental conditions under which tea is produced, and to improve the lives of tea workers. FLO is a non-profit, multi-stakeholder organisation made up of 24 member organisations worldwide. It’s responsible for the strategic direction of Fairtrade, the Fairtrade standards and producer support.
ETP and FLO will work together in the following key areas:
- In order to reduce duplication in auditing for tea growers, ETP will now recognise Fairtrade certification of producers, and focus its own monitoring activity on producers that don’t have another independent certification.
- Joint working with ETP members to facilitate work towards Fairtrade certification of producers in their supply chains, where the producers and companies have expressed interest.
- The Ethical Tea Partnership will identify and implement joint projects to address specific issues facing producers in the tea industry, and work to mobilise resources from ETP members and other funders for these.
Rob Cameron, CEO of FLO, said: “Fairtrade is an important part of the tea sector. Collaboration and partnership have always been at the heart of our vision in the Fairtrade movement, and we can build a better, stronger future by working with others who share our goals.”
Sarah Roberts, ETP’s executive director, said: “ETP’s aim is to have strong relationships with organisations who can help us achieve our mission of a thriving tea sector that’s socially just and environmentally sustainable, and the Fairtrade movement has an enormous amount to offer. We’re looking forward to working together on the ground.”
