Working with diemaker Arden Dies, the packaging manufacturer has become one of the first in the UK to effectively emboss and reverse-cut corrugate packaging.
Reverse-cutting techniques have been used in the fibreboard industry for over 20 years. However, TRM is one of the first to successfully trial the process using corrugate board.
The process involves cutting the board on a flatbed die-cutter using a bespoke form manufactured by Stockport-based Arden Dies. The corrugate is cut from both sides with a 2mm offset on the interior, which provides a smooth cut line and prevents the appearance of nicks traditionally left by tear lines when the retail ready packs are opened in-store.
“At TRM, we have always strived to develop innovative and industry leading packaging,” said Paul Bridge, change manager at TRM Packaging. “The success of the reverse-cutting and embossing trials is the latest example of the business’ focus on being a leader in the corrugate sector.”
TRM has also developed an embossing process that uses specialised tooling, again provided by Arden, during the flatbed die-cutting process to raise areas of the corrugated board and provide a more tactile finish.
“We will soon be in a position to offer reverse-cut and embossed packs to our customers who are increasingly looking for innovative finishes and luxury features that help FMCG products stand out in-store,” said Bridge. “These capabilities are yet another example of how we can add value to our customer’s packaging and help their products compete on-shelf.”
