Soaring sales of speciality cheese, especially the unique Boilie Irish goat's cheese pearls, produced a trading record for Northern Ireland's Fivemiletown Creamery in 2011, the best ever sales in its 114-year history.

The creamery, in the year ended 31 December 2011, saw sales of its portfolio of branded Cheddars and soft cow's and goat's cheeses rise by 50% to a record level of £24.5m mainly in Britain, other parts of Europe and the US.

The creamery also secured the first sales of its speciality cheeses in Hong Kong and the Middle East. Pre-tax profits increased to £421,000. The growth in 2011 followed a 30% rise in sales the previous year.

The year also saw significant growth in premium own-label cheese provided to Lidl and Musgrave Group.
