San Diego’s Mission Brewery has announced the release of a new premium IPA called Plunder, which combines nine different varieties of hops to produce an “extremely well-balanced and drinkable” beer.
The 7% ABV offering was first brewed in 2014 as a small-batch beer, and has now returned as part of Mission’s core line-up. The San Diego-style IPA finishes dry and is full of fresh hop flavour, Mission Brewery said, with a bright white head and burnt amber appearance.
The beer will initially be available on draught and in 22oz bottles, followed in a few months by 12oz bottles.
Mission Brewery lead brewer Bobby Oliver said: “One of the most important characteristics you’ll discover is how balanced this beer is. It has a lot of aroma. There are huge notes of tropical fruit with resinous hints of mango, pineapple and grapefruit, then the malt backbone kicks in and really rounds out the beer.
“It’s incredibly attractive in a glass and truly represents what a west coast IPA really is,” Oliver continued, adding that it makes a difference to other astringent and bitter modern IPAs.
The beer’s launch coincides with the opening of a new tasting room and function facility covering more than 5,400 square feet, taking the brewery’s total amount of tasting and events space up to nearly 10,000 square feet.
