Victoria legislates for water in drinking establishments
Filed by Rachel Delahaye
The Age has reported that, under new laws, pubs, bars and clubs in Australia’s state of Victoria will soon be required to provide free drinking water to customers.
Adam Jaffrey, spokesman for the youth anti-violence group Step Back Think, told The Age: ”It makes for a more enjoyable, safer and more friendly night for everybody, but we brought it to the government’s attention in November last year.”
Some establishment owners are not so enthusiastic, saying that the legislation would threaten business, while others are enjoying the flip-side of the legislation, which states businesses such as hair salons will be able to offer complimentary alcoholic beverages to their clients.
The free water legislation is in keeping with a general shift towards free water provision in bars and restaurants, with the UK bringing in a law earlier this year that declares refusal to give water to customers where water is readily attainable punishable by fine or imprisonment.
