UK food retailer Waitrose has scrapped its online shopping delivery charges, and other supermarkets may be forced to follow suit.

Waitrose has abolished its £3 and £5 charging structure from today, and analysts say the move will cost the company about £50,000 a week. Abolishing the charges is likely to put pressure on larger rivals such as Tesco and Sainsbury’s, who may be next to scrap online grocery delivery charges.

“We appreciate this may be an expensive move for others to follow, but it will reduce customers’ internet grocery bills by around 5 to 10%,” said Waitrose MD, Mark Price.
