English wine is proving to be the drink of choice for Britons in 2012, as sales soar in time for a summer of patriotic celebrations, according to Waitrose.
Waitrose has seen an enormous surge in the popularity of still English wine, which is up 92% year on year, as people gear up to celebrate the a Queen's Diamond Jubilee and cheer on Team GB during the Olympics.
English sparkling wines are also enjoying strong sales, with the last four weeks' sales up 17% year on year.
Andrew Shaw, Waitrose English wine buyer, says: 'English wine producers have worked tirelessly over last ten years to reach an unparalleled level of investment in this country's vineyards and their potential for excellent quality wines.
"We now rival not only the highest quality sparkling wines in the world but we also produce a diverse range of red, white and rose wines. It is so exciting that we can look forward to toasting a whole summer of British events with a truly homegrown tipple."
