Milk fat makes a comeback

Most of us have become accustomed to viewing fat as something to take out of healthy products, along with sugar and salt, but milk fat now appears set for a renaissance.
Scientific research is finding good things to say about milk fat. At the recent annual sessions of the Global Dairy Platform, I heard:
- the obesity epidemic being linked to cheap, reusable cooking oils
- full fat dairy products being associated with longer life
- experts advocating milk fat in enteral nutrition for cardiac patients in intensive care.
The French dairy industry is already promoting butter’s health benefits on television, and sales are rising again.
Milk fat’s makeover is making natural dairy an even better place to be.
What they’re saying on Twitter …
- I only drink full fat milk. Everything else tastes like water. (@MonAndCha)
- I have to have my Frosted Flakes with LOW FAT MILK???? Nooo! It’s like driving a Ferrari with a Toyota engine. (@Ishmam87)
- Low fat milk and regular milk make a world’s difference in an omelette. (@haus_of_k)

It was a terrible mistake to ever suppose that saturated fats cause clogged arteries(1). I concluded long ago that saturated fats are benign over a wide range of intakes as long as they are consumed in the context of adequate supportive nutrition(2). In addition, any effects saturated fats may have on cholesterol values(3) are purely physiological, not pathological, and likely beneficial(4). Scientists need to look elsewhere for the cause of obesity, diabetes, noncommunicable disease, and depression(5).
