‘The Grocer’ celebrates 150th anniversary

Richard Hall12 Jan 2012

Many congratulations to ‘The Grocer’ magazine on its 150th anniversary. I’ve picked out some of the 150 defining moments it identifies in grocery history, starting with the first.

  • 1862 Pasteur pasteurises
  • 1869 Canning is commercialised by Campbell’s
  • 1879 Saccharin discovered, 550 times sweeter than sugar
  • 1882 Own label started by Sainsbury’s
  • 1901 Instant coffee
  • 1904 Tea in bags
  • 1915 Milk in cartons
  • 1916 First self-service grocery store
  • 1928 Sliced bread
  • 1951 First UK supermarket
  • 1958 Aluminium beverage can introduced by Coors
  • 1963 Weight Watchers founded
  • 1965 Plastic carrier bag
  • 1973 RFID and EPOS
  • 1982 Diet Coke launched
  • 1987 Red Bull launched
  • 1992 Fairtrade Foundation formed
  • 1998 Innocent smoothies launched.

Going through the very first issue of The Grocer dated 4 January 1862, I was intrigued by a sizeable advertisement for water filters: used by the Government Authorities … Beware of the spurious imitations.

Another advertisement was for a Patent Domestic Coffee Roaster for a cup of coffee in perfection.
