Brazil enjoys food export success in 2010
Exports of processed foods from Brazil amounted to US$38bn last year. These comprised 371 different items spanning processed food products and beverages, sent to millions of consumers spread over 197 countries.
According to the Agricultural Outlook 2010–2019 report, written by the UN’s FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) and the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), Brazil’s agricultural sector will see the most growth (40%) of any other country in the world by 2019.
The country’s agricultural exports for 2010 totalled $70bn, with $12bn in imports, resulting in a trade surplus of $58bn, according to Brazil’s official government figures.
Brazil is the world’s largest exporter of coffee, sugar, beef and orange juice, and stands out in the markets for chicken, pork, dairy products, chocolates, sweets and confectionery (exported to 146 countries) and organic products, with the fourth largest organic farming area in the world.
The country is also world’s third largest producer of pasta and second largest producer of biscuits.
Just as important is the fruit industry, in which the country figures among the top global producers, boasting a production of 43m tonnes.
Brazil’s organic products, for which 2010 exports reached approximately $250m, are expanding at top speed in domestic and foreign markets. In addition to foodstuffs and beverages, you can now easily find products such as cosmetics, clothes, fish and even frozen food from Brazil, all of which comply with organic criteria.
