The innovative creation is apparently very popular in areas such as the Philippines and the Caribbean, and offers a savoury tomato taste (thanks to the inclusion of tomato paste) with a sweet banana finish. I hear it’s great on meat, fruit, eggs, pasta, burgers and a whole range of other products too. Not entirely sure if I’d slather it all over my next meal just yet, but I have to applaud the creativity.
Other interesting items we were introduced to at the show included Zhumir Pink, which is a watermelon-flavoured vodka with a 15% ABV rating; aimed at females. Plus, Estonian-based Pureline’s latest line of ice creams, which use honey as a key ingredient and environmentally friendly paper packaging.
Germany-based IQ 4 YOU was also exhibiting a new energy drink at Anuga called Koks. Drawing on narcotic connotations with its suggestive ‘powder’ image design and the tagline ‘Pure white energy’, IQ 4 YOU’s unorthodox marketing methods seemed to work, as passers-by did double-takes and walked over for a closer look.
Despite its best efforts to fool, Koks is obviously free from cocaine and includes 51% whey permeate, as well as dextrose and a mixture of vitamins.
Cactus fruit vinegar was another unexpected innovation from Morocco-based Maroc Export. The team at the beautifully decorated Maroc stand spent some time explaining the product to us, before granting me my first ever experience of mint tea.
Our second day at Anuga has been full of great interviews, surprising creations and lots of walking. This is a fantastic show and the energy and new products on display make it a joy to be around. Hopefully, the next one in two years’ time will be even better!
