The man behind “the world’s first touring gin club” has branched out to create his own brand of aromatic gin.
Simon Fairclough will roll out three different styles of Persie gin from a steading-turned-distillery at the foot of Glenshee in Scotland. The gins focus on the profiles most popular with more than 3,000 gin-lovers involved with tastings – fruit, savoury and sweet – with each gin made using carefully chosen botanicals that evoke an emotive and comforting scent.
The 42% ABV zesty citrus gin is packed with fresh limes and oranges; the 40% ABV herby and aromatic gin contains rosemary, basil and bay leaves to create an exceptionally dry and savoury mouthfeel; and the sweet and nutty Old Tom gin, at 43% ABV, is packed with vanilla pods and almonds.
Each gin is distilled with pure glen water from the local hills and is packed in 50cl bottles – with a recommended retail price of between £26 and £29 – carrying the tagline “we nose our gin”.
Fairclough said: “I have travelled the length and breadth of the country with a carload of over 100 gins, so I’ve seen first-hand which gin styles score top marks every time. And they all have one thing in common: that perfect interplay of aroma and taste. This struck a chord with me, knowing that scientific research shows over 75% of flavour is down to your sense of smell.
“I have listened to what gin drinkers from the far north of Scotland to the south east of England have been telling me about the flavours, colours, scents and branding that appeal to them. And the result is Persie gin: three styles of aromatic gin developed with gin-lovers in mind.
“Not all styles of gin will appeal equally to everybody – but that’s the wonder of taste and smell; it’s all deeply personal and subjective! This is exactly why we have produced three gins. Our tastings show this is the best way to make sure there is something for everyone.”
