The excise and customs tariff bills, which will legislate a 70% tax hike on spirit-based premixed drinks, are set to be introduced into the lower House of Representatives for a second time after being knocked back by opposition lawmakers in March.
Shadow health minister Peter Dutton told reporters that his conservative coalition still considers the measure to be a tax grab that won’t deter binge drinking, but in light of the government’s deteriorating budget position it has decided not to oppose the bills.
