When John Lansdall announced his retirement to his employers, the only gift they gave him was a pint of beer. Fortunately for John, his employer was the West Country brewing company Bath Ales – and the beer has been brewed in his honour.
Big John is described as a “traditional, robust and hearty” intoxicant – the beer, that is – crafted from Pilgrim hops and containing 3.9% alcohol by volume. This characterful ale is said to possess “biscuit flavours with hints of dried fruit” and takes its name from the long-serving employee’s nickname.
During his 18 years with Bath Ales, Lansdall has been the landlord of several of its pubs as well as latterly being a part of the brewery’s beer delivery team.
Roger Jones, managing director at Bath Ales, said: “Big John will be sorely missed by his colleagues and customers. He has been such a big part of the company for so long and recently a stalwart driver in the beer delivery team. He has unquestionably left his mark, especially at the Hare On The Hill, where he will always be remembered for his plain-speaking approach and unwavering determination.
“We can think of nothing better than continuing John’s legacy at Bath Ales with a pint of ‘Big John,’ an ever-dependable ale, packed with character and always likely to lead to a good time.”
And the man himself said: “Having a special beer named after me was was a really great surprise. I couldn’t ask for a better send-off. I can’t wait to taste the beer but have no doubt that it will be very tasty and popular.
“Having been with the company almost from the beginning, I’ve seen it develop and grow from a grass-roots brewer with plenty of ambition to the successful business it is today and I’m proud to have played a part in that.” The drink will be available at all Bath Ales pubs for a limited time only.
