Ben & Jerry’s has released a new online video to celebrate the return of Free Cone Day – its annual anniversary celebrations in which it hands out free ice cream.
The US-based company has given away ice cream on its birthday every year since it was founded in 1979. Ben & Jerry’s will reignite the tradition on 14 April between midday and eight o’clock, after last year’s celebrations spanned almost 750 retail outlets in 26 countries.
The new video features consumers waiting for ice cream at stores across the US, with one claiming that the promotion is “possibly one of the greatest days ever”. The company announced its return on their Instagram channel earlier this week.
“Not only is giving away free foodstuff a measure of goodwill,” explained news website Inquistr, “it can be a lucrative business practice as well, at least for those restaurants that discover their sales increase as a result of customers buying extra accoutrements to go along with their free items.”
Announcing the news, Ben & Jerry’s added: “We think our fans are awesome, so to say thanks for another year of support we give out free Ben & Jerry’s. It’s how we celebrate and spread peace, love and ice cream around the world!”
