Bioenergy Life Science’s (BLS) ingredient Bioenergy Ribose has received a positive opinion from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) for the safety of use as a novel food ingredient.
Used in food nutrition products, Bioenergy Ribose is BLS’s flagship sugar which works to increase levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to boost energy levels and accelerate energy recovery.
BLS said that Bioenergy Ribose has been used in dietary supplements for nearly 30 years in Europe. In the US, where it is FDA GRAS-certified, it is used for sports nutrition and in functional food and beverage applications.
Marianne McDonagh, BLS vice president of sales, said: “We have worked very hard for this achievement and are very happy we have the safety approval from EFSA to use Bioenergy Ribose in food and beverage applications in the EU.”
She added: “We look forward to continue working with the EU Commission to define the list of food categories and expanding our brand and core product, Bioenergy Ribose, in Europe.”
The news comes days after BLS’s Bill Visser spoke to FoodBev about the benefits of Ribose and its uses in a variety of segments.
“Ribose is manufactured in your body, it’s a natural ingredient,” he said. “Your body produces it but very slowly, so when you expend energy you’re using up all the Ribose and all the ATP that you have stored. Without Ribose, you cannot have ATP for the cells to draw upon.”
He said that as consumers are learn more about what their bodies need, they become more interested to get an advantage on how to nourish and energise themselves.
