Scottish craft brewer BrewDog has launched the second instalment of its Restorative Beverage for Invalids and Convalescents, an homage to the healing power of 19th century India Pale Ales.
The irreverent beer maker will celebrate the launch of the new IPA by prescribing individual doses to those in need of a hoppy tonic. The beer is inspired by words from the “father of pharmacology”, Dr Johnathan Pereira, who wrote that Indian pale ale is “carefully fermented, devoid of all sweetness, or, in other words, to be dry” and continued to describe it as “the most valuable restorative beverage”.
BrewDog has taken the bitter and dry balance of this particular beer to extremes, making it the bitterest beer ever released by the brewery.
To celebrate, BrewDog will offer consumers the chance to send details of their ailment to the company’s official Twitter account and receive a personalised prescription with a recommended dosage, which can then be exchanged for beer in any of BrewDog’s 28 UK bars.
James Watt, co-founder of BrewDog, commented: “India pale ale has a long history of medicinal properties, and we’re taking IPA back to its roots with the launch of Restorative Beverage for Invalids and Convalescents. We’ve packed this brew with four times the amount of hops usually found in IPA, resulting in a palate-stripping bitterness and healing prowess. This is a 21st century beer with an 18th century ethos. History has been rewritten, and the IPA will never be the same.”
Brewed with columbus, citra, amarillo and centennial hops, the new 8.5% IPA is described as “a beer for thrill-seeking hopheads”. A light and pale golden body defies its initial punchy taste before a reviving bitter edge leads, BrewDog said.
Watt continued: “This is IPA in its cleanest form. Restorative Beverage For Invalids and Convalescents is the result of a process steeped in tradition. The new beer provides a direct, bitter and intense punch, inoculating hops and forceful malts directly to the tongue. Strong in both name and flavour, it’s the most aggressive, relentless IPA we’ve ever made, and it’s just what the doctor ordered.”
This week, the brewery launched Equity For Punks USA. With investment funding a brand new 100,000 square foot brewery in Ohio, the American based venture will take BrewDog beers to new corners and drinkers of the world.
