The first dedicated gin distillery to open in the heart of Manchester will launch a new small-batch gin inspired by the city’s heritage.
Manchester Three Rivers gin, from City of Manchester Distillery, is named after the trio of waterways on which the British city was founded. It is produced by hand in small batches by master distiller Dave Rigby, using a custom-made 450 litre copper pot still from distillation equipment manufacturer Arnold Holstein. The 40% ABV final-product is then packed in 70cl bottles.
It is the result of Manchester native Rigby’s “conscious decision” to form a new drinks brand that was “as well-rounded and distinct as the city itself”.
The craft gin is described as “well-balanced with a combination of 11 different botanicals”, with a subtle perfume on the nose preceding a particularly smooth mouthfeel with mid-palette sweetness derived from vanilla, cinnamon, almond and oats. Finally, cardamom gives way to a satisfyingly long, spicy, black pepper finish, City of Manchester distillery said.
“I wanted to create something different, the kind of drink I wanted to drink, where the citrus wasn’t right at the front but it’s more about the mid-palate,” Rigby told the Manchester Evening News.
“We’re really proud of it and I think it stands up next to any gin on the market.”
The gin is currently available from a pair of Manchester-based wine merchants, but the distiller is pursuing additional stockists to launch the new offering.
