The range of source ingredients has greatly expanded beyond the commonly seen soy to include hemp, coconut, almonds, oats and quinoa.
A rather unusual new product, even in this environment, from Spain-based SoriaNatural, is Canary Grass Drink. Canary Grass is a herbaceous plant native to the Mediterranean region and is grown commercially in several parts of the world mainly as a source of birdseed, which it is best known for.
In the Canary Islands, Italy, North Africa and Mexico, canary grass is also used as food for humans.
Canary Grass Drink is a 100% vegetable alternative to milk which offers health benefits as it is free from lactose and cholesterol and also low in sodium and fat.
The milk alternative is said to have a mild and surprising flavour and to be suitable for breakfast, milkshakes or desserts. It contains 13.5% of canary grass with the main ingredient being water. The beverage doesn’t contain preservatives or colouring, and retails in a 1-litre carton.
