The gloves are off and unlike other international beer and brewing awards, the British Craft beer challenge invites the genuine beer consumer – the everyday drinker – to cast a vote on their favourite beer.
Local food producers are also going to be tempting us with their wares, and musicians will provide the accompaniment to this challenging day. It’s going to be a tough one.
What’s great about craft beers is the individual characters they have. Whether you like a rich, malty and slightly sweet beer (as I do) or a sharp citrus blonde beer with a fruity finish, there will be something here to suit all palates.
I just love the names too: from Sunny Republic’s Beach Blonde and Shark Head to Magic Rock’s Carnival, and from Blanche de Bruxelles to Bacchus Framboise, La Couffe and Erdinger Dunkel – it’s like a beer lover’s mantra, pleasing to the ear and temptingly enticing.
The programme descriptions make great reading too. Take Hefe from the Bristol Beer Factory, which is described as being, A German-style wheat beer with a rich banana & clover aroma, it pours with a thick rocky head and has a hazy orange appearance. Zippy & zesty with banana, bubble gum and hints of grapefruit, it’s a refreshing beer perfect for a sunny day.
Well, with the English weather, you can’t count on that, although it’s been amazing recently. But such tantalising descriptions. I’m counting the days till Saturday.
