Cauli Rice has launched a range of microwaveable rice alternatives made using fresh cauliflower grains, which can be used in the place of starchy foods.
The low-calorie staple is available in four variants – original, Mediterranean, Indian pilau, and lemongrass and chilli – which each retail for £1.99 for a 200g pouch. Representing one of the five recommended daily portions of fruits and vegetables, the rice has between 60% and 75% fewer calories than white rice – or between 68 and 112 calories per bag.
It can be used instead of rice, potatoes or pasta and features noticeably less of a cauliflower taste due to the company’s patented production process. The products are a “natural source of vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre helped to satisfy hunger without the calorific consequences or blood sugar spikes associated with the consumption of starchy carbohydrates”, Cauli Rice said.
The range is the result of three years of development and two rounds of financing, including a campaign on crowdfunding platform Crowdcube last summer that saw it raise nearly £500,000 from 285 separate investors, surpassing its initial £300,000 target.
Writing in her Crowdcube pitch, Cauli Rice co-founder Gem Misa-Harris said: “We believe that we have a product that is an absolute game changer in the diet and weight loss market. Rather than being restrictive, Cauli Rice is an enabler that gives you the space to enjoy the food you love. This is a brand with a modern outlook that comes to a solution by approaching the problem in a different way.”
