The research revealed that the top three favourite flavours are cheese & onion, original and salt & vinegar, with the exception of respondents from the east Midlands and the southwest, who preferred salt & vinegar and original (respectively) above cheese & onion, and Northern Ireland who ranked bacon as their second favourite flavour above original.
Regional children’s tastes were also more likely to vary from the most popular flavours, to include prawn cocktail (which beat salt & vinegar in East Anglia, as well as the north and northeast regions). Children in Wales showed a strong preference for cheese, with cheese flavour coming second only to cheese & onion.
Another flavour that has made it into parents’ and children’s favourites across the UK is pickled onion. Those from the northwest in particular rated pickled onion (along with prawn cocktail flavour) closely behind the top three.
Pom-Bear – the teddy-bear-shaped potato snack – is now available in pickled onion flavour.
