Around 500 international companies will be taking part in this year’s exhibition, to showcase their latest ingredients and expertise for the creation of nutraceutical products and functional foods and beverages.
A supporting programme of free events will include the suppliers’ seminars, EAS advisory service for nutritional products, and a discussion forum on the implications of the EC Claims Regulations for business.
A full conference programme will include topics such as beauty foods, mental health, ingredients from nature, as well as topics such as nutrition & health claims regulations.
Already, companies are preparing their developments and many will be taking the opportunity to launch new solutions, unveil new research or discuss new application ideas.
Algatechnologies will launch its 20% astaxanthin in oleoresin form at the show, and will celebrate its AstaPure brand’s new ‘Generally Recognised as Safe’ status (GRAS) following its approval by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for use in food and beverage applications.
Astaxanthin is a highly potent antioxidant that’s approximately 500 times more effective than vitamin E and more powerful than other carotenoids such as lutein, lycopene and beta carotene, according to Algatechnologies, which is expanding its production capacity by an additional 50% during 2011 in order to meet demand for the natural astaxanthin, AstaPure.
Applications, particularly in the area of sports nutrition, and products developed for cardiovascular and skin health will be highlighted on the stand.
Bariatrix Europe will demonstrate its expertise in the area of custom production of high-protein nutritional products, with a particular focus on products for healthy weight loss & weight management, well-being & health, and sports nutrition.
The company’s team of biochemists and engineers in combination with a knowledgeable sales & marketing team will be on hand to discuss product options.
The results of a second clinical study that confirms the diuretic effect of its Cacti-Nea prickly pear fruit extract, will be the focus of activity for Bio Serae, which will demonstrate how the ingredient can be easily incorporated into a wide range of food and beverages to provide diuretic and weight management properties.
In the latest study, 87% of women were convinced by Cacti-Nea’s efficiency in helping them to refine their silhouette and reduce their water retention troubles. Cacti-Nea was found to increase dieresis by 27% in women with a BMI (body mass index) of less than 25, and to help reduce the swelling and heavy legs sensations associated with water retention.
On the stand, Bio Serae will also discuss the launch of organic versions of Cacti-Nea, and its Serenzo ingredient for reducing stress symptoms and improving mood.
First time exhibitor at Vitafoods, Carbery will showcase its range of whey protein hydrolysates and isolates. Its Optipep brand of hydrolysed whey proteins is said to be high in di- and tri-peptides, which are suitable for the rapid delivery of essential peptides for protein fortification, recovery and strength building.
A clean tasting Optipep has recently been added to the range and will also be featured in the ‘New Product Zone’ at Vitafoods. Optipep SN has been found by Carbery’s sensory research with the North Carolina State University in the US to be the best-tasting hydrolysed whey protein available. The company will also highlight its Isolac range of whey protein isolates produced using Cross-Flow-Micro Filtration to ensure ingredients with high quality, low fat, clean taste, excellent clarity and low lactose.
Copalis will present its novel beauty-from-within and anti-ageing solutions during the show. Already established for use in cosmetics and supplements, Copalis’ protein M+, marine polysaccharide complex contains multiple active compounds such as chondroitin sulphate, hydrolysed collagen and glucosamine. It combines the same proteins and polysaccharides as found in the skin and can help improve the basic skin structure and texture, as well as the skin’s natural ability to retain moisture (+25% skin hydration). Protein M+ is highly soluble and highly bioavailable, and fully digestible.
Danisco, under the promise ‘to bring health to everyday life’, will demonstrate its wide range of ingredients that meet the needs of today’s on-the-go lifestyle and pave the way to health and nutrition claims in the end products.
Building on its probiotic expertise based on the Bifidobacterium lactis HN019 and Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM strains, Danisco will highlight its Howaru Balance range: Howaru Balance Kids, Howaru Balance for adults aged 18-55, to help strengthen their defences against day-to-day stresses, and Howaru Balance Plus for older adults and seniors.
The Howaru Balance Plus concept includes Danisco’s prebiotic dietary fibre Litesse – a highly soluble, low calorie, sugar-free, low glycaemic, speciality carbohydrate. A Howaru/Litesse orange juice will be available to sample on the stand, along with a refreshing peppermint 100% sugar free gum containing Danisco’s Xivia xylitol sweetener.
Among other topics, the fortification of near waters will be a focus on the Dr Paul Lohmann stand, where the company’s calcium lactate plus allows beverage manufacturers to formulate with high levels of calcium without affecting the appearance of the end product.
By working on calcium lactate’s sensory behaviour, Dr Paul Lohmann has created an ingredient with a calcium content of 17.5% (compared to 13% in standard calcium lactate, according to the company’s research) and with greater and instant solubility. It will be demonstrated along with the company’s magnesium, iron, zinc, potassium and other trace elements for bottled water, beverage and fruit juice applications.
DSM Nutritional Products will showcase a number of health and nutrition ingredients and solutions at this year’s show, including two new Health Benefit Solutions, Essentials for kids & teens and Essentials for men. The Health Benefit Solutions comprise a range of vitamins, minerals and functional ingredients formulated to meet the specific nutritional requirements of their target audience.
Already in the range are Health Benefit Solutions: Guard your Heart, Upgrade your Vision and Empower your mind among others, which will all be available for sampling in a range of health shots on the stand.
The company’s scientifically substantiated solution for the promotion of healthy blood flow, which picked up last year’s Hi Europe award, Fruitflow, will also be discussed this year.
Demographic targeting has shaped some of the developments Fortitech will be discussing on the stand. According to Fortitech, the company is the only global company solely dedicated to the development and creation of custom nutrient premixes (over 30,000 to date) for the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries. It has identified that there are almost 3.5bn males in the world and 57% of those are between the ages of 20 and 65, who are becoming increasingly concerned with maintaining good health to help sustain their productivity and to ward off the development of chronic diseases and their associated morbidity and mortality.
According to Fortitech, as more men look to fortified functional foods and beverages to maintain their overall health and wellness, prevent the occurrence of specific health conditions or manage an existing health condition, growth in this category is likely to continue at an unprecedented rate.
Fortitech will also highlight its latest initiatives as part of the World Initiative for Nutrition (WIN), which works with manufacturers to develop high quality fortified foods that are available and affordable.
Jet lag will be the focus of activity for Frutarom, which highlights that jet lag symptoms also affect doctors, chefs, shift works and other people who live ‘out of sync’ with their inner clocks. The company will showcase its solutions specifically targeted at combating the symptoms of jet lag such as concentration problems, stress management, sleep disorders, digestion and tired eyes.
The Jet Lag Campaign includes extracts of blackcurrant, schisandra, fenugreek, wild green oat, lemon balm and red vine leaf. Each of these extracts targets specific symptoms and, depending on the individual product concept, can be used alone or in combination.
Frutarom’s range of extracts for digestive health, urinary conditions, mental health, cardiovascular and immune health, beauty from within, slimming, women’s health and bone & joint health, among others, will also be discussed.
Gelita will give visitors the lowdown on its Verisol ingredient for beauty from within, as well as its Fortigel for joint cartilage recovery. Verisol, which is produced from native collagen and has excellent bioavailability, is designed to boost the skin’s collagen metabolism directly from inside the body. Taken orally in supplements or in products such as chocolate or instant coffee, it increases the skin’s moisture and prevents the formation of wrinkles.
It will be shown alongside Fortigel concepts designed to stimulate the cartilage cells to increase the production of collagen and proteoglycans – the two major components that make up approximately 90% of cartilage dry mass. According to research by Gelita, Fortigel helps improve joint mobility and helps reduce pain. Fortigel Plus includes another component – Cynosbati (rose hip extract) – to give an additional anti-inflammatory effect.
The latest clinical findings to support the benefits of Lyc-O-Mato, a natural lycopene complex, will be unveiled by LycoRed on its stand, along with its wide range of healthy application concepts for snacks and confectionery.
Lyc-O-Mato contains several carotenoids with high antioxidant properties, and recent trials have showed that it can reduce blood pressure and increase endothelial cell function; act as a strong anti-inflammatory agent; and protect against UV-induced skin damage.
As part of its application work on snacks and confectionery, LycoRed will showcase confectionery fortified with micro-encapsulated vitamins and minerals using advanced micro-encapsulation technology that enables cross interactions of different ingredients, such as iron and vitamin C that are important for children’s health.
The company will also discuss its new line of crystal clear soluble vitamin D3 for beverages, CapsuDar D3 CWD, which dissolves instantly and stays stable at a wide range of pH levels.
On its stand, Lonza will present its portfolio of branded health ingredients including Carnipure, DHAid and ResistAid. The company’s Carnipure is high quality L-Carnitine, a nutrient essential for energy metabolism, which has been shown to have a beneficial role in weight management, sports nutrition, infant nutrition, male fertility and pregnancy.
DHAid is a pure vegetarian source of DHA omega 3, and ResistAid is an immune support ingredient made from North American larch trees. ResistAid consists of arabinogalactan and bioactive flavonoids, which have antioxidant capacity. Recently published research shows that ResistAid selectively enhances immune systems for healthy adults.
On the stand, Lonza will showcase products containing its ingredients, including Vitalia’s Slimline Muesli Mix containing Carnipure, and will be sharing the newest research results on Carnipure and exercise recovery.
Martek Biosciences will emphasise the multiple health benefits associated with its algae-derived DHA omega 3. A vegetarian alternative to fish oil, Martek’s life’sDHA can be used in a wide range of applications including supplements, baked goods, confectionery, dairy and beverages.
Several recent studies to support the benefits of DHA in memory improvement and cardiovascular health, among others, will be discussed.
Ocean Spray’s Ingredient Technology Group will be highlighting the whole body benefits of cranberries on its stand, where it will also demonstrate its 65 years of knowledge of this powerful fruit.
While the cranberry is known for its role in maintaining urinary tract health, ongoing research details its potential to support many different areas of the body, including cardiovascular health, gastrointestinal health and general health & well-being.
Apart from its anti-adhesion mechanism on bacteria in the urinary tract, cranberry’s nutrient profile also includes a high polyphenol content, vitamin C, quercetin and fibre.
Roquette will present global solutions as part of its objective to ‘help nutraceuticals sector players to maximise their investment potential’. In addition to the nutritional and health benefits and technological functionalities of its ingredients, Roquette offers in-depth scientific, nutritional, technical, regulatory and marketing support for its clients, and at the show its development teams will be revealing many ideas for nutraceutical product concepts. These include, for plant-based well-being, a sustainable, 100% natural protein tablet concept, which demonstrates the potential of its Nutralys range of proteins, a table-top product of 100% Nutriose soluble fibre produced from wheat or maize, and an essential nutrient concentrate in the form of Chlorella (micro-algae) tablets.
For general health, Roquette will showcase a hunger-reducing Satiety Smart stick, which draws on the nutritional properties of Nutriose, and Lycatab Mineral tablets featuring directly compressible calcium for bone health.
The health and nutritional benefits of its Peptan collagen peptides for skin beauty, bone & joint health and as part of nutritional and weight management programmes, including new studies on Peptan and skin health, will be the focus of activity for Rousselot.
In-vitro and in-vivo studies have recently testified to the advantages of collagen peptides for promoting bone health, reducing joint pain in people suffering from arthritis, and sportsmen & women. A pure protein, Peptan Collagen has also been shown to be effective in food and beverage products promoting weight stability or even weight loss. A range of innovative product concepts will be on the stand, highlighting the organoleptic properties of Rousselot’s range.
Solbar will present a range of products for the dietary supplement, health and wellness markets, including its state-of-the-art soy isoflavone extracts that offer relief for menopause and osteoporosis. According to Solbar, its isoflavones are produced in standardised processes and their concentration is confirmed using validated analytical methods.
It will also present its wide range of soy protein, such as the low viscosity isolated soy protein Solbar Q 842, which is suitable for protein bars and extruded snacks. Solbar Q 735 is a calcium fortified isolated soy protein designed for beverages.
Tournay Biotechnologies will highlight the enhancements to its range of natural plant extracts, hydrolysed vegetable proteins, fruit powders and fibres, which include soluble extracts such as green tea, hibiscus, pomegranate, guarana, ginseng, or green coffee.
For near water applications, Tournay Biotechnologies has developed a wide range of fruit powders that are designed to be easier to process, use and store than other fruit sources and to provide a cost saving solution for clean label products.
Further developments include Tournay Biotechnologies’ partially hydrolysed guar gum (PHGG) with reduced viscosity for use in beverages (even at high concentration levels), which allows for the addition of 3% to 6% of fibre without impacting product viscosity.
It will be demonstrated along with a 100% natural and soluble extract of sea water rich in magnesium – SIMAG. Further news of developments experienced during Vitafoods will be covered in the next issue of Food & Beverage International.
