The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) has welcomed the results of a poll that suggests nearly six in ten consumers prefer their groceries and fresh produce in paper-based packaging.
The survey, commissioned by the Confederation of Paper Industries and conducted by YouGov, found that 57% of more than 2,200 consumers prefer paper-based packaging compared with just 8% who prefer plastic containers. 31% of respondents expressed no preference.
Additionally, the poll found that 46% of consumers were more likely to purchase an item if the packaging was paper-based.
PEFC said: “According to the CPI, the findings… reflect that paper and corrugated remain the most popular form of packaging for consumers in the UK, with corrugated packaging being the most recycled packaging medium, as well as being one of the most engaging to consumers, due to its personalisation and colour printability qualities.
“The results from the CPI’s poll further underline the findings from PEFC’s first global consumer survey, which showed that certification labels, such as the PEFC label, is one of the most trusted means of giving confidence to consumers that wood-based products are sustainably sourced.”
