The wrap is also dairy-free and is licensed by Coeliac UK to carry the Crossed Grain symbol on the packaging to highlight the product’s gluten-free credentials.
The new wrap will add to Costa’s existing gluten-free offering, which currently includes a Gluten-Free Brownie and Gluten-Free Cherry Bakewell.
Costa marketing director Alison Heeks said: “One in 100 people have coeliac disease so more consumers are looking for savoury, gluten-free food to enjoy with their coffee. Listening to customer feedback is vital for us to grow as a business, which is why when our customers used social media to tell us that they would love to see a savoury gluten-free offering in-store, we listened. By working with Coeliac UK, our food development team have managed to create a delicious savoury option that we know our gluten-free customers will love.”
Sarah Sleet, chief executive of Coeliac UK, the national charity for people with coeliac disease, said: “As more people are diagnosed with coeliac disease, which will require them to follow a strict gluten-free diet for life, the demand for gluten-free products will continue to increase. We are very pleased to see that Costa has responded to the challenge of this growing market with the launch of this new gluten-free wrap.”
The wrap itself is new to the gluten-free market and has been developed by Newburn Bakehouse and has not been used by any other sandwich manufacturer before.
