The booming growth of the craft beer industry in the US may be drawing to a close, with volume increasing by 5% during the first half of 2017.
Figures released this week by the Brewers Association show a reduction in volume growth from 8% last year and 16% for the same period in 2015.
With the recent surge in craft breweries, companies are having to evolve and become more innovative to keep up with the competition.
As of 30 June, there are 5,562 breweries operating in the US, an increase of 906 on June last year. There are also 2,739 breweries in the planning stage.
Brewers Association chief economist Bart Watson said: “The growth pace for small and independent brewers has stabilised at a rate that still reflects progress but in a more mature market. Although more difficult to realise, growth still exists.
“The beer world is highly competitive and there is certainly a mixed bag in terms of performance. Some breweries are continuing to grow, whereas others are having to evolve their position and nurture new opportunities to ensure they keep pace.
“Many brewers are benefiting from on-premises and taproom sales, and recent state-based reforms have the potential to help brewers in new regions capitalise on this growth.”
