Kemps spokeswoman Rachel Kyllo told Twin Cities Business that Dairy Farmers of America will become the 100% equity owner of Kemps LLC, but would not share further details except to say the companies will begin the transfer process soon. The agreement is subject to regulatory approval. Kemps makes milk, ice cream and yogurt products under brands including Kemps, Hood, Hagan, Green’s and Arrowhead.
The Kemps brand started in 1914 as a small creamery in southeastern Minnesota, owned by the Kemps family. Through a merger, Kemps Ice Cream Co of Minneapolis became Marigold Foods in 1961. That company evolved through the years and in 2002 became Kemps LLC, to identify more closely with its popular brand name. Kemps was purchased by HP Hood LLC, based in Lynnfield, Mass, in 2004.
