Danish brewery Mikkeller has teamed up with potato chips company Lokale Rødder to create two flavours of organic beer crisps.
The companies collaborated with the aim of creating a crisp with a distinctive character and using beer ingredients.
The two flavours are: yeast and smoke, which is said to have clear notes of smoke, pepper and cocoa; and malt, yeast and hops.
The malt, yeast and hops flavour was created after experimenting with 23 ingredient mixes.
Both varieties are made with Swedish hot-pressed rapeseed oil and organic Tivoli potatoes.
Hops were sourced from Belgium, where the majority of Mikkeller beers are brewed. The brewery said the main challenge to create the snacks was the “violent bitterness, which was extremely difficult to control”.
In a statement, Mikkeller said: “Organic yeast flakes with a deep umami and almost cheesy flavour was the final piece of the puzzle. Together with the strong, floral, organic black pepper and vinegar powder, the yeast worked perfectly as a counter to the sweet malt.”
Lokale Rødder is a small batch potato chips company founded in 2015 by childhood friends Christian Hansen and Magnus Sonne.
