Dutch company Seamore has developed a pasta substitute made from dried seaweed that is full of minerals, nutrients, vitamins and antioxidants.
I Sea Pasta can be used in place of the carbohydrate-heavy wheat variety and, because it grows five times the amount during cooking, less than 20g is needed for each portion. As well as being rich in nutrients and antioxidants, the seaweed pasta is low-calorie, gluten-free and packed full of fibre. It also provides a source of omega-3.
The pasta substitute is completely natural and farmed in small quantities – up to just 15% at a time – meaning that it grows back and is 100% sustainable. The innovation, Seamore claimed, could help to tackle the issue of food security and provide a sustainable and plentiful food source, while commercial seaweed harvesting would give future generations an incentive to ensure that the world’s oceans were kept clean.
I Sea Pasta is cultivated on the Irish Atlantic coast and shipped back to the Netherlands. It has launched in Germany, Belgium, Australia and the UK this year and plans to expand availability with additional launches in other countries.
The company aims to make the product available online, in supermarkets, and in restaurants. It is already available in Wholefoods stores with a price of £5.95 per pack.
