Meat and poultry (20%) ranked second with vegetables and bakery goods following closely behind.
“Few packaged products appear in the top 20,” said Incpen director Jane Bickerstaffe. “It is worth noting that the majority of the high wastage foods are typically sold both loose and pre-packed. It would therefore be worth exploring if packaging more of those sold loose would reduce waste.”
Incpen’s study used data from three major UK supermarkets, which together account for 65% of the UK market. The total number of food wastage in the list accounted for 22,000 tonnes of waste and £43m each year.
